Proper storage of products

In the face of Easter and the accumulated food reserves, we would like to draw your attention to the problem of food waste. In the last post (you can find it HERE) we wrote how to prepare for celebrations sensibly and how to share the excess of festive dishes with those in need with openness of heart.

Acting with zerowaste with mind we try to value and use what we have.

And that is what we encourage you to do!

Storing food correctly is not an easy matter. It is worth knowing a few rules that will allow you to enjoy the freshness and long shelf life of products whose storage location is not at all obvious.

Vegetables that should be in the fridge are courgettes, aubergines, Brussels sprouts, leeks, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, mixed green vegetables, dill.

What fruit is better to leave on the kitchen counter?

– apples, pears, bananas, avocados, pineapple, mangoes, peaches,

I recommend freezing berries, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, sour cherries, cherries, plums – storing them when they are fresh is extremely problematic. Thanks to freezing, we can enjoy their taste all year round!

What if you already have some very ripe bananas?

Banana ice cream is definitely a better solution than throwing them to the bin! Just cut the bananas into slices, put them in a container and freeze. At any time blend them with the addition of e.g. yoghurt or milk (it can be a plant milk) and it’s ready! I also suggest serving them with peanut butter, which will turn up the taste of the dessert.

What about the rest of the vegetables?

The coolness of the refrigerator can affect the wilting, wrinkling of the skin, and even change the consistency. Tomatoes, peppers better leave at room temperature.

Store onions, carrots and potatoes in a cool place, protected from light – this will stop the growth of shoots and greening of potatoes. However, remember about air access!

WARNING! Note the combinations in which you store fruit and vegetables.
Apples, bananas, pears, tomatoes and peppers by secreting ethylene
accelerate the ripening / decay of other products.
On the other hand, if you want to enjoy a perfectly mature avocado
faster - arrange them in the company of these products!

By following these tips you will reduce the risk of premature deterioration of your vegetables and fruits, so food waste will no longer concern you!

However, first and foremost don’t forget to make reasonable purchases!
