Physical activity, health and quality of life are inextricably linked with each other. Human body was constructed to be moved, and that is why it requires regular physical activity to function properly and to avoid illnesses. Physical activity is the most effective method of prevention as well as treatment of many chronic diseases. The problem appears, however, when we have to divide our time between work and other commitments, rest and additionally find a bit of time for regular training. And the physical activity needs to be regular. Only thanks to scrupulousness and regularity we can achieve our goals, maintain motivation and ensure long-term health.
What is physical activity?
It is defined as every body movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure.
How much should I exercise?
The recommendations of the World Health Organization for adults regarding physical activity to maintain general health are as follows:
- at least 150 minutes of medium intensity aerobic exercises a week or 75 minutes of high intensity exercises;
- a single physical activity should last at least 10 minutes;
- exercising for at least 300 minutes weekly at medium intensity rate or 150 minutes at the high intensity rate can bring additional health benefits;
- strength exercises of large groups of muscles should be done at least twice a week.
