What does a physiotherapist have in common with a headache?

Tension headache is a reason why you should go to a physiotherapist! Do you have a headache of a dull, oppressive nature, felt as a crease, radiating to the occiput or forehead? It can be fixed! You can find out how to do this in this post.

Tension headache belongs to myofascial pain syndrome.

It is characterised by the presence of trigger points (TrP) within skeletal muscles. TrPs are hypersensitive and painful with direct pressure and are palpable in the form of nodules. They can trigger projected pain, increased muscle tension and reactions from the vegetative system. The presence of TrP is closely related to myofascial pain syndrome (MFPS).

Characteristic for myofascial pain syndrome is:

  • limited range of motion in the joint;
  • muscle weakness;
  • muscle stiffness.

The trigger point and its calculations

TrP can take active and latent form.

Active TrP is able to cause discomfort to the patient. Examples are: tingling, paraesthesia, burning or numbness. Compressing active TrP results in a pain that is projected even in very remote areas of the body. Active trigger points on the head, neck and neck muscles and their radiation are often confused with organic headache.

On the other hand, latent is not a cause of spontaneous pain, which means that the patient may not be aware of his presence at all. However, it can affect the body by giving the characteristic features of MFPS (see above) without pain.

How to free yourself from TrP?

There are several TrP releasing techniques. One of them and also the most commonly used is compression, and especially the method of constant pressure. It involves finding resistance from the tissue and then performing deep pressure directly on TrP. Many specialists believe that the compression method reduces tension in the area of muscle tissue.

Why is it important to release trigger points?

TrP therapy reduces tissue tension, which improves cellular energy processes and, as a result, results in a smoother blood and lymph flow.

So, if you are struggling with headaches and need immediate relief, then visit a professional physiotherapist. The physiotherapist will contribute to the less frequent occurrence of pain and reduce the duration of such episodes.

Important to remember!
In addition to the use of pharmacological treatment, there is physiotherapy,
which has a wide range of methods used to improve health and relieving
patients of pain.
